Wind made fishing a tad challenging early in the week, but after the front passed, the weather improved and so did the fishing. Yesterday the hot spot was New Pass. We caught big bluefish on Cotee jigs around the bridge, then moved out to the bar and experienced non-stop action on bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and loads of ladyfish casting Cotee jigs and Rapala X-Raps.
Earlier in the week we did well at Country Club Shores, Marker #6, and the Radio Tower flat casting gold jigs. The wind picked up so we ran south and caught a big bluefish and a couple of snook on Rapala plugs near the mouth of Phillippi Creek.

Fishing continues to be very good as the weather is cooperating nicely! Light easterly winds result in perfect conditions out on the beach. Spanish mackerel are eating #4 glass minnows and DT Specials for anglers fly fishing. Live shrimp and Rapala X-Raps also worked well. A live shrimp intended for a mackerel was stolen by what turned out to be a 30 pound redfish while anchored over a little structure in 25 feet. The macks are thick but false albacore are more scattered out. Speckled trout and large bluefish are taking Clousers and Cotee jigs on the deep flats in the bay. Big ladyfish were fooled by glass minnows and gold Cotee's in New Pass on the shallow bar.
On the freshwater scene, Doug Forde and I had a great day on the Myakka River on Friday. Bluegill, stumpknocker, small bass, and a big tilapia were caught on #8 minnow patterns and #10 poppers. The water is very low right now, but that just tends to concentrate the fish.

South winds warmed the water temperature up a little, along with stirring up the water, putting a damper on the fabulous beach fishing, but it should bounce back this week. It did seem to push the fish into the bay, especially the Spanish mackerel, which we caught a bunch of this week. My best action came on live pilchards around Marker #5 and Bird key, catching mackerel, speckled trout, ladyfish, gag grouper, bluefish, mangrove snapper, flounder and jack crevelle. We also caught a few small snook on Rapala X-Raps near the mouth of Phillippi Creek in the morning on the outgoing tide.
